Camp Moves Me

Great hashtag. Great cause.

What did you love about camp? What do your kids love about camp? Was it the friendship? Learning self-reliance? Self-confidence? Was it days of unplugged fun or campfire nights?

The American Camp Association wants to raise awareness about camp, while raising money to send more kids to have that experience. The ACA is raising funds for their #CampMovesMe fundraiser — Camp Moves Me celebrates “the spirit of camp while raising dollars to send more children to ACA-accredited camps across the country.” (From the ACA site)

We spoke with Tom Holland from ACA.

How Does It Work?

  1. Through a partnership with, you pledge to hike/bike/run/swim (get active!) a certain amount of miles in the month of October 2014.
  2. Then you solicit donations from those you know will support this important cause. (For example, a donor might pledge $1 for every mile you run. If you run 10 miles in the month, then the donor will give $10. Or the donor can also pledge a flat fee amount).
  3. Dedicate your entire month of exercise to the cause of camp.

How’s that for motivation?! If you loved camp, or your kids did, here’s an opportunity to spread that joy. Help kids who otherwise couldn’t afford to have that experience.

How will I track my progress?

They make it easy to track your progress, through a downloadable phone app (we love this) that will also track your donations.

CMM-WhatMovesYou-smWhere does the money go?

Through their Send a Child to Camp program ACA partners with Ultracamp Foundation and SCOPE to distribute Send a Child to Camp funds across the country.

Both organizations work with camps directly to find the children that will be the recipients of Send a Child to Camp campership funds.

As such, ACA does not fund campers directly through parents and families; instead ACA-accredited camps can apply to receive funding from this event with SCOPE and the Ultracamp Foundation. The camps then use the money for their scholarship funds.

Parents who would like to find out more can contact either SCOPE or Ultracamp, who can point you in the right direction.
